I don't know about you, but every wedding checklist I've seen online has at least 100 things on it. But if you're looking to work out an approximate budget or set out a timeline, you want to start with the main things.

I recently got married myself. Below is a list of the big stuff, and a few smaller - but pricey - things too. I've ordered it by how much we speant on each item, so the big stuff is up the top.

  • Venue hire: The venue you'll get married in.
  • Catering: This may or may not be included in the venue hire. We hired a dry venue, so it wasn't for us. If you're taking a DIY approach, you might want to break this down into the following areas: The food (obvs), staff, furniture (tables and chairs), and the other little bits you'll need to hire (crockery, cutlery, glassware, linens).
  • Dress: Quite an important one - don't forget to include alterations. We forgot to include them. They were £600 :/
  • Photographer: Check whether they're bringing their own food. Most ask to be fed.
  • Band: Check whether they're bringing their own euipment, most - but not all - do.
  • Also, check whether they'll need food.
  • Alcohol: As we hired a dry venue, we did a booze cruise to Calais. We got some very decent bubbly for £1 a bottle. God bless the French.
  • Videographer: Again, check whether they need feeding.
  • Rings
  • Bridesmaids dresses: And alterations.
  • Flowers
  • Hairdresser
  • Suits
  • Make up
  • Presents: for the groomsmen and the bridesmaids.
  • Stationery printing: Save the dates, invites, order of service are the main bits. Include postage here, too, and have a think about whether you want to make any signs for the venue (bar, directions, toilets etc).
  • Wedding cake: M&S have a good range.
  • Lights: We did a bit of a DIY wedding - so ordered about 250 metres of fairy lights. Ebay is your best shot - and if you get them in advanced, you can ship them in from China.
  • Wedding insurance: It's worth it for the peace of mind.
  • Giving notice
  • Wedding favours: Sweets if you're on a budget. Everyone loves sweets.
  • Marriage certificate
  • Registrar: again, if this isn't included with the venue.
  • Shoes
  • Underwear: 'I'm not marrying you if you wear those boxer shorts'. My wife, shortly after saying yes.
  • Jewellery
